The topic of aging—getting older and looking younger—is more and more pervasive in our society's collective consciousness. Especially now, with Hollywood stars, reality TV, and tabloids driving a widespread preoccupation with appearing as youthful as possible. Women are feeling increasing pressure not just to look good for their age, but to actually never age at all. We all get older, day by day, and there is no stopping it. However getting older doesn't mean we have to look older.
It's that time of the year again. With dropping temperatures, low humidity and central heat, my patients start coming in for "dermatitis" and flares of their pre-existing eczema. Usually, the humidity in Houston naturally protects our skin, but the harsher winter conditions cause our skin to become more sensitive, irritated, and easily reactive. I especially see more dermatitis on the hands because we do not naturally have oil glands on the palms to protect them.
It was one of the most memorable scenes from the movie Mommie Dearest. Faye Dunaway (playing Joan Crawford) rises at 4:00 am and engages in a strict morning ritual, compulsively scrubbing her face with soap and boiling hot water, then plunging her face into a bowl of rubbing alcohol and ice to close the pores. And don't forget about her nightly routine of pulling her face taut with elastic straps. For those of you that haven't seen the movie, Joan Crawford was not the perfect example of good mental health.

Samantha Jones. Sex and the City, circa 2002, Season 5 (if you can't tell, I am a fan and have all of the seasons memorized!). The scene where Samantha gets a “freshening” peel days before Carrie’s book launch party is one of the most iconic moments on the show and has affected how women perceive chemical peels. That episode put chemical peels on the map, and struck fear in the hearts of women everywhere.
I feel like I have been living under a rock for the past year. I would not consider myself a product junkie, but I do like to try new things and experiment with the latest trends. For the past year or two, I have seen the explosion of BB creams. More recently, I have seen advertisements for CC and DD creams. I was intrigued by what these creams claimed to accomplish. Were these life changing Fountain of Youth miracles I was missing out on? Or was this all perfectly planned marketing hype? I decided to do some research and try a few different creams. This is what I discovered.
